Soundings magazine story on Ocean Master Marine

Ocean Master founder Hauptner was one of many designers and builders, who brought a raceboat background to the table, and it influenced the design of his first boat, a built-to-order outboard-powered center console that could fish offshore with the big inboards. The 31-foot prototype, designed by Jack Hargrave and considered large for that time, turned out to be a classic that’s still in production today.

Thirty years later, Ocean Master remains well known for its rugged performance-oriented center consoles (and a walkaround), which now run from 18 to 34 feet. The Ocean Master 34 is a fine example of its work. With twin or triple outboards, or single or twin inboards, the boat is designed to make the run to the islands (with its 450 gallons of fuel) and stay there, thanks to its cabin with berths for four and a head. The 34, which comes in Super Console and Walkaround versions, rides a modified-vee hull with a deep forefoot and plenty of bow flare. And because it’s semi-custom, a variety of fishing gear can be installed.

Ocean Master is all-fiberglass builder, featuring laminates up to 1 inch thick and fiberglass stringers glassed to the hull for extra strength. The inner deck liner is a vacuum-bagged glass-and-core composite. Its newest boat is the Ocean Skiff 27, a “bay and bluewater boat,” as Hauptner puts it, with single-outboard power.
